Why makombo?
Travel is always better when someone shows you the way.
For me, that person was my mom.
She grew up in Detroit with very little, but she developed an enormous curiosity about the world.
She pushed her children to explore and to connect with people.
She combed the world to stock her custom paper and fabric store in Los Angeles. She curated the most personalized parties for her clients.
She had the gift of completely losing herself in laughter. That ease of vulnerability was her superpower. And a universal language.
She made fearless travelers out of her kids.
She showed me that the richest experiences begin with one person being there for another.
That is the idea behind makombo.
So much of what makes travel extraordinary already lives inside other people.
But that knowledge often disappears into forgotten conversations and scattered notes.
makombo gives it a place to live.
From local to global exploration, makombo is the community where one person’s discovery can become someone else’s adventure.
The name makombo means crumbs in Swahili.
Take a crumb. Leave a crumb.
Take something useful from the people who came before you. Then leave something behind for the next person.
I want makombo to be for the world what my mom was for me.
A source of curiosity.
A nudge to explore.
A connection to people and places we might otherwise never discover.
And ultimately, makombo is a tribute to everyone who has ever opened the world a little wider for someone else.
